After more than a year and a half of writing this column, I've found that sometimes the best ideas come from readers...
At the San Diego Institute for Policy Research, the think tank that Steve Francis founded between his unsuccessful mayoral campaigns, senior policy analyst Vince Vasquez also is floating the idea that bicycles could help reduce our reliance on gasoline.
In particular, Vasquez likes an idea that began in Europe 10 years ago and is now being introduced in the United States: bikes that can be rented in one location (say, a park-and-ride station) and dropped off at another (a bike stand at an office complex or shopping center).
