December 2008
SDI/Competitive Edge Research and Communications, Inc. Barometer of Public Opinion.
As of mid-December the State of California faces a $40+ billion budget deficit. As part of the SDI/Competitive Edge Research and Communications Barometer of Public Opinion SDI surveyed 1004 Californians about their opinions on how they would solve the budget mess. Among the survey's findings are:
- Californians of all ideological stripes and from both political parties oppose cuts to K-12 education, Universities, and health and human services programs.
- By large majorities they opposes increases to the state's sales tax and vehicle license fee. They are more inclined to support increasing the income taxes paid by wealthier Californians and levies on tobacco products
- There is a sharp partisan divide and, paradoxically, information isn't helping. The more that Californians say they know about the budget the further apart they are when it comes to possible solutions.
